It can be lonely for leaders at the top. In the same way that we need legal counsel at key times, I believe executives need strategic counsel for similar key decisions, whether around organizational direction, financial sustainability, or human resource challenges. I provide a combination of high-level strategic creativity for big-picture challenges, as well as in the weeds, hands-on partnership to overcome challenges in execution. Whether crafting that perfect email to a funder that’s been intimidating you, developing your organization’s pathway toward more sustainable financial grounding, or working through restructuring and empowering your team, we all benefit from having a trusted, strategic side kick. Why I think Sounding Boards are So Important: I use words like strategist and partner because they convey a different sentiment than consultant. Sometimes there IS something that can be outsourced that you can delegate fully to a consultant. However, what I have found myself in need of most was actually a consistent thought partner, someone who could be both in the weeds with me and an objective outside perspective. At times, I needed someone by my side helping me push through some of the intimidating items on my to do list, responsibilities where I’d been procrastinating, and working to alleviate bottlenecks. However, I also needed an objective outside perspective who could operate from a macro, big picture lens to help reflect my blindspots, help make strategic decisions, develop creative solutions to leadership problems, and inject a wider lens of analysis as I considered possible paths ahead. Feelings of loneliness, as well as the stakes and resources at your helm, seem to increase as you ascend in leadership; therefore, that’s exactly where an ongoing strategic sounding board can amplify your impact, leadership, and organizational potential.
